editing editorial pages

editing the editorial pages of a newspaper can be a tricky job at time -- but its something that one should take with a bit of humour -- if you dont do that then you wont be able to do your job properly -- and sometimes you will make changes to an article that will be misconstrued or misunderstood -- or sometimes it will simply be a difference of opinion -- the worst thing would be though if you lost a good writer because of that

  1. Wouldn't the best thing be to have a conversation with the writer about the difference of opinion, etc. prior to going into print? Assuming that most people are rational, shouldn't that lead to an agreement beforehand?

  2. yes -- but sometimes this cannot be done -- mostly because the most contentious cuts are done when they have to be made on the page -- there really is little time then to contact the writer -- because of the deadline
